I was looking on the web about US base closures. They have closed alot over the last two decades.Including Subic bay in the Phillipines.Great run ashore in olongapo city near the base.It closed in 1996,and Clark airbase. Also they shut portsmoth naval base and Charleston naval base.Same old excuses as us "streamlining the forces to meet the modern threat"

I wonder how Subic Bay and Olongapo get by now. Everything survived off
the naval base and visiting ships.

At a guess Harry it doesn't! Was a bit of a shanty town at best, guess most of 'em just upped and moved away the remaining few might have gone fishing or turned to bandrity (the amount of Yanks they killed just off base was a good start - remember they counted everybody out of the gate and everybody back in - seems quiet often they didn't tally in the morning, remember being told DO NOT GO DOWN THE BACKSTREETS, can't think why it was nice down there, as long as you wasn't in a yankee uniform I guess!

We were warned to be careful ashore in Olongapo. But the locals got on with the brits it seemed. Probably thought we were not worth robbing.

They did me over, that is the money changers on that bridge as you come out
of the base. Found a load of Japanese occupation money in the middle of my
bundle that looked similar to local Phillippino currency.
Bastards had gone when I shot back there.
Live and learn.

That money might have been worth something as a collector's item in the UK.
