Troops will get more money in their pay packets than expected, today’s budget announcement has revealed.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer said the Government would follow the Armed Forces Pay Review’s recommendation that personnel should receive a half percent increase to the ‘x-factor’ supplement- a payment which compensates for the hardships of service life.

It had been expected that Ministers would refuse to agree to the extra payment.

The rise will come into force on 1st May and is in addition to a one percent pay increase.

Mr Osborne praised the military, saying: “the awarding of a posthumous Victoria Cross to Lance Corporal James Ashworth this week reminds us of the courage and sacrifice that all who serve in our Armed Forces are still making to defend our country’ and announced servicemen and women would be exempt from changes to progression pay which has an effect on public sector workers who move up a pay band.
